Concordia is the name given to the point where the Baltoro Glacier and the Godwin-Austen Glacier meet in Pakistan's Karakoram mountain range. It is located at 4,691 metres (15,390 feet) above sea level in Pakistan's Baltistan province. The area is a popular destination for trekkers and backpackers, as well as a base camp for climbing excursions on K2 and other neighbouring peaks.
At 8,611 metres (28,251 feet) above sea level, K2 is the world's second-highest mountain, after Mount Everest (at 8,849 metres (29,032 feet)). It is located in the Karakoram range, partially in Pakistan-administered Kashmir's Gilgit-Baltistan area, and partially in a China-administered Kashmir region included in the Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County of Xinjiang.
The Godwin Austen glacier from K-2 flows north into the Baltoro glacier at Concordia. Concordia is a Latin word that means 'harmony with the heart.' It was first used by a British mountaineer, John Frederic Hardy, to describe a location where two or more glaciers meet, and the term was later adopted for this camp site in the Karakoram Range. Aside from the 14 peaks above 8000 metres, Concordia's panorama is marked by Mitre Peak's recognisable profile and extraordinary grace, despite its "low" elevation of 6017 metres.
